A Fairy in Flight

Spotlight Theme – Nurturing Compassion in Children

How Do You Nurture Compassion in Children?

Naturally, the most important way is by your example and letting children see how you practice compassion to others.  But another very effective way is through the stories you tell them. Stories are one of the best ways for children to step into another person’s shoes, see the world from another’s eyes and feel it with another’s heart.

This month, one of our episodes that offers a great opportunity for you to explore how we can be compassionate with others is a lovely original tale by storyteller Cathy Lichty about a little fairy who is different from all the other fairies because one of her wings is broken and so she cannot fly like them.

Here are some discussion questions for your little listener.

Discussion Questions

Jar full of question marks
  • Why did the other fairies not include Cela in their games?
  • How do you think that made Cela feel?
  • How did Cela solve her problem of not flying?
  • Have you ever had a problem that you were able to solve for yourself?
  • Have you ever seen someone at school who was sad or lonely?
  • How do you think you can help someone who is different and cannot do all the things other people can do?
  • What do you think this story’s souvenir is?  (a story souvenir is that little nugget of truth about what it means to be human that lingers with you after you hear the story – it is what you REMEMBER most about the story – souvenir – means to remember.)

Here are some other stories from our podcast where names are very important.
