The Cat’s Elopement

The Cats Elopement

How to make Valentine’s Day special with this lovely Japanese fairy tale

The Cats’ Elopement

A lovely fairy tale from Japan about two cats who fall in love with each other, but, because they both have different owners and live in different houses, they decide to elope and set off on their own, where they encounter a fierce and ferocious dog. The Cats’ Elopementis a good story to spark discussions about what it means to love someone and be a true and loyal friend!

Spotlight Theme – Love and Loyalty

Cat showing love

As a former elementary teacher, a narrator of books for the blind, a storyteller at a low-income school, the published author of nine picture books, a frequent presenter at schools and conferences on “Linking Literature to Life”, and as the host of my own storytelling podcast, Journey with Story, I enjoy sharing my passion for stories with people of all ages and all walks of life.  And after a lifetime of being steeped in stories that stir my soul and make my heart sing, I believe that…

Good stories can give us space in our lives to pause and ponder some bolt of beauty, some truth, or some new way of looking at life.  It is what I call, the Story Souvenir

Souvenir is a French word, meaning to remember. So, it is some nugget of truth or some glimmer of truth about what it means to be human that will linger with us long after the last word is uttered – it is what our heart will remember most.

Each month we will pick one story for you to pause and ponder with your little listener – some discussion questions and some background about the country where the story takes place – or, as in this month’s episode, instead of focusing on the country, we will focus on the story’s theme.

Let’s start with some discussion questions for you to share with your little listener after you have heard the story

Discussion Questions

Jar full of question marks
  • Do you think it was fair of Gon’s master not to sell him to Koma’s mistress?
  • Do you think it was fair of Koma’s mistress not to sell her to Gon’s master?
  • If you were Gon’s owner or Koma’s, would you agree to sell your cat to bring her/him happiness?
  • How did Koma show she was loyal to Gon?
  • How was Gon brave?
  • Have you ever done something brave to help someone you love?
  • What does it mean to be a loyal friend?
  • What do you think the story’s souvenir is?
